Restorative Measures (for String Quartet)

PROGRAM NOTES

Restorative Measures reflects the way creative work often unfolds amid the interruptions of modern life. The piece is built around a continuous four-measure theme of running sixteenth notes, a melody conceived as a complete, flowing idea. Rather than hearing it all at once, the music begins by presenting the theme in fragments — short segments heard in order but separated by rests, creating a stop-and-start flow that mirrors thought disrupted and resumed. After this unsettled opening, the accompaniment stabilizes and the melody is restored into a continuous, unbroken line.

This pattern of interruption and return reflects the experience of composing in brief stretches of available time, where ideas are paused and later revisited as continuity is gradually regained. A slower passage follows, offering a moment of calm — a step away from constant motion and a return to clearer, more focused listening. From this restored perspective, the music resumes with renewed energy, carrying the work toward a lively conclusion.

Through its movement from interruption to continuity, Restorative Measures reflects both the challenge of maintaining creative focus in a restless environment and the value of occasionally stepping back to restore clarity, balance, and flow.
